Video Update #3: New Music by Mark Kent

I have been working hard to get v1.2.1 out to the beta group, and I worried that making video update #3 would prolong it even further. Thankfully fellow Starbase Orion player and composer Mark Kent saved me that trouble! Mark graciously offered up his talents and has composed four separate tracks totaling nearly 30 minutes of original music. Many thanks to Mr. Kent, Starbase Orion has never sounded this good!

Designing The Fleet Part 3: The Humans

“I think any creative person who has followed Star Trek at all has been inspired by its ever-evolving aesthetic over the years. For the Humans, I quite intentionally decided to tap into my own inner-trekkie and render some of my own variations on that style. I think any science fiction artist could appreciate the chance to do that, and I’m glad I got to. The concept goal for this fleet was familiarity. The Humans are meant to feel instantly recognizable.”

Designing The Fleet Part 2: The Cyban

We continue to showcase Jason’s ship design, this week focusing on the Cyban fleet!

“The Cyban, I imagine, don’t tinker so much as they perfectly refine what they’ve already found to work, so I wanted the progression of each ship class to feel like the logical extrapolation of the previous class. Beyond that, I didn’t think too much about the Cyban as much as I just started laying down ships that I thought looked cool; and then thought, for the next ship in line, ‘what would make this even cooler?’ In retrospect, they became sort of an edgier version of the Borg, with maybe some Cylon influences tossed in.”

Designing The Fleet Part 1: The Isather

Jason has done a spectacular job designing the fleets for the various races in Starbase Orion. In this five part series we will showcase his designs from concept sketches, to final in-game versions that are used in the ship designer and in space combat. First up are the Isather!

“With the Isather, I hoped to convey a sort of arms race. Being the war-mongering brutes that they are, they just keep adding more and more guns on bigger and bigger ships. There’s not a lot of variances between the upper tier ships other than their sheer size and armaments, and that was the intention. Rocco also mentioned once that it has the side effect of making their ships look like they’re lined with spikes, and I love that. It just adds to the visual ferocity of their fleet.”

Updated screenshots, including first looks at ship combat

Today is a big day for updates! First I am going to start off with a new crop of updated screenshots, this time of it running on iPhone. In the screenshots are also some of the first looks captures from the ship combat system.

The music of Starbase Orion

All of the original music for Starbase Orion was composed by Petros Tsoulkas . Petros spent a large amount of time researching the 4x space game arena, garnering some great inspiration to create some truly magnificent pieces.
